On April 12, 2025, in Phu Tho province, the Vietnam Society of Interventional Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (VIGES), in collaboration with Hung Vuong General Hospital, successfully organized the scientific conference \"Application of some advances in the diagnosis and treatment of early colorectal cancer,\" attracting more than 500 delegates from across the country.<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n
I. OVERVIEW OF THE WORKSHOP<\/strong><\/pre>\n
The workshop was organized to update participants on the latest advances in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer, while also enhancing the capacity of medical staff at healthcare facilities nationwide. The event consisted of two main sessions: an academic discussion in the morning and a hands-on practical session in the afternoon.<\/p>\n
In his opening remarks at the workshop, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Cong Long \u2013 Chairman of VIGES \u2013 emphasized: \u201cColorectal cancer is becoming one of the serious health threats in Vietnam. However, if detected early through screening methods such as colonoscopy or fecal occult blood testing, patients have a chance of successful treatment, ensuring a better quality of life, as well as reducing medical costs.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr. Dang Thanh Hai, Director of Hung Vuong General Hospital, shared: \u201cThe cooperation between Hung Vuong General Hospital and VIGES in organizing this conference demonstrates our determination to improve the quality of healthcare services, especially in the field of gastroenterology, bringing practical benefits to people in the region and nationwide.\u201d<\/p>\n
\"\"<\/p>\n
II. KEY CONTENTS OF SCIENTIFIC REPORTS<\/strong>\n1. The role of new endoscopic technologies in early colorectal cancer screening.<\/em><\/strong><\/pre>\n
Dr. Le Quang Nhan, Vice President of VIGES and Head of the Endoscopy Department at the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City, presented a report on current advanced endoscopic technologies. The report provided detailed information on magnified endoscopy, blue light imaging (BLI), and linked color imaging (LCI). These technologies significantly improve the ability to detect early cancerous lesions in the colon and rectum, especially flat lesions that are difficult to detect with conventional endoscopy.<\/p>\n
\"BLI and LCI light technology enhances the contrast between blood vessels and mucous membranes, thereby highlighting early-stage cancerous lesions and helping doctors detect and diagnose them more accurately,\" Dr. Nhan emphasized.<\/p>\n
2. The value of the FIT-test in colorectal cancer screening in the community.<\/em><\/strong><\/pre>\n
Dr. Pham Binh Nguyen, Vice President of VIGES and physician at the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Center, Bach Mai Hospital, presented on the role of fecal occult blood testing (FIT-test) in colorectal cancer screening in the community. This is a non-invasive, simple, low-cost screening method that can be widely implemented in the community.<\/p>\n
The report indicates that the FIT-test has relatively high sensitivity and specificity in detecting precancerous lesions and early colorectal cancer. Widespread deployment of this test in the community could contribute to reducing colorectal cancer mortality through early detection and treatment.<\/p>\n
3. Endoscopic treatment of upper gastrointestinal bleeding not caused by portal hypertension.<\/em><\/strong><\/pre>\n
Dr. Ha Van Tuoc from Hung Vuong General Hospital shared his practical experience in endoscopic treatment of upper gastrointestinal bleeding not caused by portal hypertension. The report provided information on the causes, clinical symptoms, diagnostic methods, and especially the endoscopic interventional treatment techniques.<\/p>\n
Through studying cases at Hung Vuong General Hospital, Dr. Tuoc has demonstrated the high effectiveness of interventional endoscopic techniques such as hemostatic injections, hemostatic clips, and bipolar electrocautery in treating gastrointestinal bleeding, helping to reduce the rate of rebleeding and mortality.<\/p>\n
4. Preparing the patient for colonoscopy.<\/em><\/strong><\/pre>\n
Bachelor of Nursing Le Phu Son from the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City presented on the importance of colon preparation before endoscopy. The report provided detailed guidelines on diet, laxative use, and important considerations to ensure optimal colon cleansing, thereby improving the quality of endoscopy and the polyp detection rate.<\/p>\n
\"A well-prepared colon is a key factor in determining the quality of an endoscopy, helping to increase the rate of lesion detection and reduce the risk of missed diagnoses,\" emphasized Bachelor Son.<\/p>\n
III. CLINICAL PRACTICE SESSION<\/strong><\/pre>\n
The highlight of the workshop was the clinical practice session, where Dr. Le Quang Nhan and Dr. Nguyen The Phuong directly performed gastrointestinal endoscopy using modern technologies (LCI, BLI, magnified endoscopy) to diagnose early colon cancer lesions and colon polyp removal techniques with instruments such as: Clutch Cutter, Snare, and biopsy forceps.<\/p>\n

IV. PROFESSIONAL COLLABORATION<\/strong><\/pre>\n
Within the framework of the workshop, VIGES signed cooperation agreements for professional support with several hospitals: Hung Vuong General Hospital, Phenikaa University Hospital, Bac-Thang Long General Hospital, Hung Ha General Hospital, Hung Thinh General Hospital, and Duc Minh General Hospital. This is an important step in improving the diagnostic and treatment capacity for colorectal cancer at medical facilities, contributing to improving the quality of healthcare services for the people.<\/p>\n

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Cong Long stated: \u201cTo date, VIGES has gathered more than 1,000 members, including doctors and nurses from major hospitals, private hospitals, and clinics nationwide and abroad. The association has been and is fulfilling its mission of improving the quality of diagnosis and treatment of digestive diseases in Vietnam.\u201d<\/p>\n
V. CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS<\/strong><\/pre>\n
Colorectal cancer is becoming more prevalent among younger people in Vietnam, primarily due to unhealthy lifestyles such as high consumption of red meat and processed foods, low vegetable intake, smoking, alcohol consumption, and lack of exercise. According to 2022 statistics, the country recorded nearly 17,000 new cases and over 8,450 deaths, ranking fourth in incidence and fifth in mortality among common cancers.<\/p>\n
To address this challenge, the workshop proposed several solutions:<\/p>\n
    \n
  1. Strengthen public awareness campaigns about healthy lifestyles and risk factors for colorectal cancer.<\/li>\n
  2. Develop a colorectal cancer screening program that combines both the FIT-test and colonoscopy.<\/li>\n
  3. Invest in modern equipment and train high-quality human resources in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy.<\/li>\n
  4. Strengthening international cooperation and the transfer of advanced technologies in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    VI. CONCLUSION<\/strong><\/pre>\n
    The scientific workshop \"Application of Advances in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Early Colorectal Cancer\" was a great success, bringing many practical benefits to the medical community and the public. This is a testament to VIGES's continuous efforts to improve the quality of diagnosis and treatment of digestive diseases in Vietnam.<\/p>\n
